Object description

Jozef Poniatowski (1763–1813) was born in Vienna. His parents were the Polish-Lithuanian magnate Andrzej Poniatowski, a brother of the last Polish king Stanislaw August, and Theresia, Countess of Kinsky. He began his military career in Austria where he served up to a colonel. In 1807, he became Minister of War, and later Commander-in-Chief of the Duchy of Warsaw. In the portrait, there is a bust-length image of Jozef Poniatowski depicted in a military uniform with epaulettes. To show the merits of the man, the artist carefully painted the awards on his chest, namely the War Order of Virturi Military, a large cross with the star, and the Order of the White Eagle. The artist mainly focused on the face of the person portrayed, conveying the portrait features of a strong-willed man who felt free both on the battlefield and among the high society.
