Object description
The sculpture of the Ascension of Christ represents a frontal, full-length contrapposto image. Traditionally, such a single sculpture was placed on a tetrapod at Easter. The saint's figure imitates Western iconography, which became widespread in Ukraine in the 16th century. Christ is dressed in a loincloth around his hips and a long red robe fastened at the chest, which falls downwards freely. Jesus' clothing is sculpted with recessed planes and rounded edges. The carefully anatomised, athletically built body demonstrates the master's skill. The figure's head is framed by long strands of wavy hair and a short, split beard, which seem to float in the wind, adding expression to the sculpture. The ascetic, elongated face of Christ is stern but calm.
