Object description

Teodor Andrzej Potocki (1664–1738) was a canon of Krakow (1687), Bishop of Chelm (1699), Archbishop, Primate of Poland since 1723, and cavalier of the Order of the White Eagle (1732). He was a son of Pawel Potocki, castellan of Kamianets-Podilskyi, and Eleonora Saltykova. The half-length image of Teodor Potocki is depicted in a slight turn to the left. He is dressed in a church robe. On his chest, from under a white square collar, on a blue ribbon hangs the Order of the White Eagle, just as it was worn by clergymen. Wavy hair is seen from under the pileolus. The artist mainly focused on the face of the person portrayed, particularly on the carefully painted big eyes covered with heavy eyelids, and a fold between thick gray eyebrows, which enhances the state of concentration of the man. A large nose, full lips and a double chin emphasize the image of the powerful and strong-willed man.
