Object description
The painting represents the Virgin Mary feeding Christ, a typical iconographic scene. The image emphasises the human nature and earthly vulnerability of the Saviour. The Holy Scriptures, cherries, and figs on a pedestal are depicted in the foreground. Such small religious images served as an element of private prayer. The works of that kind reminded medieval viewers of the significance of the Virgin Mary as the mother of God and of the earthly embodiment of God. The composition belongs to the German School of the 16th century and is executed in a rather primitive manner.
