Object description

The painting depicts Count Andrzej Alojzy Ankwicz (1777–1838), a Roman Catholic bishop who served as the Archbishop of Lviv from 1815 to 1833. He studied in Krakow and Vienna. He was ordained in 1810. He served as a canon, rector of the seminary, and director of the theological cabinet in Olomouc (Czech Republic). In 1815, he was appointed Archbishop of Lviv and was consecrated as a bishop that same year. Ankwicz is remembered in history as an energetic organiser who cared for the discipline of the clergy and the development of liturgical practices. He also cared for public education. As a politician, he supported the policies of the Habsburgs. In 1817, he received the title of Primate of Galicia and Lodomeria from the Austrian Emperor. From 1817 to 1818, he was a rector of Lviv University. In 1833, he was transferred to the position of Archbishop of Prague, where he is buried in the Archcathedral of St. Vitus. He was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Leopold. The portrait depicts the man as a legatus natus of the Kingdom of Bohemia.
