Biography: Aleksandr Kuprin (1880–1960) was a Russian artist. He studied at the Moscow School of Sculpture and Architecture. In 1909, he first took part in the exhibition of the "Golden Fleece" salon. From 1910 he became one of the members of the "Jack of Diamonds" association, and from that time he painted mainly still lifes in the cubist style. Between 1913 and 1914, he visited Italy and France. In 1918, he taught in Vkhutemas. From 1924, he began to paint a realistic landscape, and from the 1930s – industrial. He began teaching drawing and painting at the Moscow Textile Institute in 1928 and became a professor at the Department of Painting in 1930. In 1954, he became a corresponding member of the Academy of Fine Arts of the USSR.

Object description

A light drapery with large folds occupies almost the entire surface of the painting. In the background on the left is a dark red tray with three red peppers, a pomegranate and a light-coloured mug, on the right is a white vase with an aubergine, below are green peppers and a yellow quince. The painting is rendered in light tones, sharpened by the dynamism of the folds of the fabric, conveyed by the grey and black colours. The work is influenced by Cézanne's simplified geometric forms (the folds on the tablecloth).
