Object description

The painting is a part of the collection of Rzewuski's paintings from Pidhirtsi Castle in 1768. The portrait is referred to as a portrait of a French lady (Portret damy francuskiej). Since 1812, when the work was hung in the Golden Room, it has been referred to as a portrait of Bethune (portret Bethune). Inventory records from the early 19th century suggest that it may be a depiction of Marie Louise de Lagrange Arquin (c.1634–1728), elder sister of Queen Maria Casimira, wife of the King of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Jan III Sobieski. She was the wife of French ambassador to Poland Francois-Gaston de Bethune. According to Polish researcher Ostrowski, this attribution is questionable because of the lack of similarity with the portrait of Marie Louise. He, therefore, puts forward the version that it is a picture of Katarzyna Franciszka Dengoffowa (? –1673), the wife of Teodor, the officer cadet of the Great Crown.
