Object description
The painting shows a three-quarter-length iconographic depiction of Saint Francis of Assisi. The saint stands in the semi-darkness by a small monastery window, through which a faint light enters. His head is bowed low, his gaze directed downwards. He looks at a skull – a symbol of the transience of life – which he holds carefully and firmly in both hands. Francis is in a state of deep concentration and reverence. Beside him, on the stone windowsill, lies a closed prayer book.
The ascetic image is completed by a brown monastic habit with a wide hood, girded with a cord tied in three knots – symbols of the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.
