Object description
This bust-length depiction of a young woman captures a moment of mystical revelation, religious ecstasy, or prayerful repentance. The neutral dark background and a beam of light directed at her face focus the viewer's attention entirely on her emotional state. Due to the absence of clear canonical attributes, the canvas may represent any popular Christian saint – such as Catherine of Alexandria, Barbara, Cecilia, or Mary Magdalene.
The heroine is portrayed in a slight half-turn to the left. Her head is tilted back, her large dark eyes are cast upwards, and her lips are half-open. Her hair frames her face loosely, with a single strand falling across her forehead. The woman is dressed in a red dress with a deep V-neck, beneath which a fine white chemise is visible.
The stylistic features of the work reveal a distinct influence of 17th-century Italian Baroque religious painting.
